Abstract/Contents:Although the necessity of irrigation is incontestable, the proper intensity and frequency of irrigation, as well as the positive and negative effects of dryness is subject to intense debate. Three kinds of dryness are distinguished from one another: 1) Ground dryness [Bodentrockenheit] 2) Air dryness [Lufttrockenheit] and 3) Physiological dryness [physiologiche Trockenheit]. Ground dryness, the most commonly understood of the three, can be caused by several factors. Coarse soils tend towards dryness more quickly, yet can have their water tables easily replenished with minimal irrigation. Conversely, fine grained soils retain water over a more protracted period of time, but due to their small pore size, are difficult to replenish. Air dryness can be caused by an underdeveloped root system, insufficient aerification, low soil temperatures, and above all high air temperatures causing higher transpiration rates. A brief sprinkling of the grasses [Kurzzeitberegnung] an hour before the hottest part of the day can reduce the negative effects of this dryness. Physiological dryness is most often caused by improper fertilization. In conclusion, suggested criteria are given which aim to target a more efficient, beneficial irrigation practice.
