| Abstract/Contents: | Recent agricultural research has shown that activated charcoal can be used to adsorb various chemicals and reduce harmful effects they may have on plant growth (1,2,3,4,5). One test demonstrated the value of using charcoal in turfgrass seedbeds which contained herbicide residues (3). Herbicide toxicity was reduced and turfgrass seedlings safely emerged from the soil. However, the use of charcoal in turfgrass areas might affect the future performance of chemicals. This would especially be true for preemergent type weed control chemicals where the charcoal could adsorb them and reduce their effectiveness. A test was initiated at the Rhode Island Agricultural Experiment Station to study the influence of charcoal, applied to established turf, on the subsequent effectiveness of chemicals used for preemer- gent crabgrass control. |
