Abstract/Contents:"Herbicide tolerance of crested wheatgrass (Agropyron cristatum L.), smooth bromegrass (Bromus inermis Leyss.), meadow bromegrass (Bromus biebersteinii Roem and Schult.), Alti wild ryegrass (Elymus angustus Trin.) and timothy (Phleum pratense L.), seeded into Melfort silty clay loam on 10 May 1985, was investigaed. Fourteen herbicide treatments were applied (kg ha-1) at the 2-3 leaf stage. Crop tolerance ratings recorded on 1 Aug. 1985 and 21 May 1986, indicated that crested wheatgrass was tolerant to chlorsulfuron (0.01 and 0.02), metsulfuron methyl (0.003 and 0.0045), DPX M6316 (0.015 and 0.03), dichlofop-methyl + bromoxynil (0.7 + 0.3) and MCPA + mecoprop + dicamba (0.275 + 0.062 + 0.962 and 0.412 + 0.094 + 0.094) but not to sethoxydim (0.15 and 0.25) and Hoe 33171 (0.18). Timothy, the most sensitive of the grass species tested, was completely killed by sethoxydim and severely injured by Hoe 33171. Chlorsulfuron at 0.02 kg ha-1 also resulted in some injury but the crop recovered the following spring. Alti wild ryegrass was injured by sethoxydim, dichlofop-methyl + bromoxynil and Hoe 33171 alone or tank-mixed with bromoxynil. Crop stunting due to sethoxydim applications were most pronounced in the spring of 1986. Meadow and smooth bromegrass were generally tolerant to all herbicide treatments except sethoxydim. Slight stunting of meadow brome was observed with applications of Hoe 33171."
