Abstract/Contents:"The variation in thousand-seed weight (TSW) was studied among 20 seed lots of slender creeping fine fescue (Festuca rubra ssp. litoralis), 19 seed lots of perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne) and 16 seed lots of Kentucky bluegrass (Poa pratensis). The seed lots represented four, four and five cultivars, respectively. Mean TSW differed significantly among species with a mean TSW for slender creeping fine fescue, perennial ryegrass and Kentucky bluegrass of 0.778 g, 1.721 g and 0.298 g, respectively. The mean TSW represented a range from 0.674 g to 0.884 g for slender creeping fine fescue, from 1.381 g to 1.906 g for perennial ryegrass and from 0.217 g to 0.366 g for Kentucky bluegrass. TSW varied significantly among cultivars within each of the three species as well as among seed lots within cultivars. The variation in TSW considerably affects the number of seeds of each species in seed mixtures as well as the total number of seeds in the mixture. It is suggested that composition of seed mixtures and exact seed rates per area unit should be calculated on the basis of exact TSW values for the used cultivars and even for the specific seed lots instead of using standard TSW values."
