Abstract/Contents:SUMMARY: "The natural soils available often do not have the granulation line required for turf carrying layers undergoing wear and tear. In order to improve the water permeability, the air contents of the soil and the resistance to condensation, the additional mixing into the soil of more or less large quantities of sand of a corresponding granulation is required in these cases. Depending on the granulation, the water capacity of sands and gravel is differently high. There are also differences in effectiveness due to the forms of the grain of sand. In order to ensure the best possible properties of carrying layers, the material has to be examined beforehand. The addition of sand with a view to improving the turf must be started early enough and small quantities must be applied frequently. The sand should possibly be washed carefully and it should show a granulation fluctuating between 0.06 and 2 mm, with a sufficiently high proportion of fine sand. Properly carried out, sand application can favourably influence a better root growth of the grasses, a smoother surface, and an activitation of the microbiotic decomposition of turf thatch." Figures are given as to specific qualities that the sand must have if it is to have any positive effect on the turf at all.
