| Abstract/Contents: | SUMMARY: "Establishing a green cover on extreme areas is in correspondence with an artificial oecological [ecological] system adapted to the conditions existing at the particular spot. Three steps are necessary: Assessment of the problem; Compilation of suitable measures; and Correct execution of the individual measures. To get at the gist of the problem the area should be visited, the customer should be queried thoroughly and substrate and soil analyses should be carried out. Only then will it be possible, taking also the plants to be used into account, to apply the appropriate measures for establishing a green cover successfully. Finally, the individual measures must be carried out at the right time by experts in the field." Extreme areas possess multiple physical and chemical qualities that are not beneficial to the establishment of a green cover, such as low pH levels in the soils, low nutrient levels, prolonged exposure to sunlight and high winds, a greater susceptibility to water erosion and usually a low cation exchange capacity (niedrige Kationenaustauschkapazität), meaning that any nutrients put into the soil will be easily washed out. However, proper fertilization of the surface, coupled with a suitable mixture of seeds selected for that given site can nonetheless successfully establish a green cover. Means of planting the seeds, applying the fertilizers ans well as the suggested times of the year best suited for successful establishment are given. The use of special mats for the protection of the newly planted seeds is also recommended. |
