Abstract/Contents:SUMMARY: "Substances for soil improvement in the meaning of the fertilizer law should and can influence soils biotically, chemically and physically to such an extent that an improvement of the soil structure and the water balance is the result, combined with a more vigorous life in the soil and a better conversion of the substances. As experience indicates, the specific application of substances for soil improvement, geared to the problem concerned, will succeed even on extreme sites initially and permanently. This success can be measured. It is important in this context to know exactly the problem factors, such as soil properties, quantity of salt and heavy metals in the soil and climatic influences. With regard to the substances used, type, quantity and mode of application in correspondence with their properties and their effect should be geared to the problems concerned. The substances should be well known. There are more or less new substances, but standard products and procedures are also known. Much experience and detailed scientific investigations are available concerning the latter. Examples, which have been documented, are silicat-colloid (Agrosil) and open cell organic synthetic resin foam (hygromull/hygropor)." Both of these soil improving substances are described in detail, along with outlines of their proper use and documented results in a variety of extreme soil conditions.
