Abstract/Contents:Discusses summer turf decline and dormancy, explaining that "summer dormancy is a survival mechanism for cool season grasses. Those grasses will enter dormancy when exposed to heat and moisture stress." Explains why grasses go dormant and the process grasses go through to become dormant. Discusses heat stress, explaining that "cool season grasses such as bentgrass can tolerate high daytime temperatures as long as the [night] temperatures are moderate." Presents strategies to prevent summer dormancy, including irrigation, pre-conditioning of turf and delaying spring application of nitrogen. Discusses cooling down turf, syringing turf, increasing air movement and mowing heights. Discusses turf fertilization, stating that "turf that has all the essential nutrients available in the right proportion will better be prepared to cope with heat stress than a plant that is malnourished."
