| Abstract/Contents: | "The emergence of Poa annua seed in the top soil when turfs are newly sown causes frequently problems, since Poa annua can hardly be controlled selectively after the grass has emerged. Disinfection chemicals, such as they are used in commercial horticulture, permit the destruction of seed also in the soil. Two turf mixtures (RSM 3 and RSM 5) were selected to test the effect of the two soil disinfection chemicals BASAMID and METAM-FLUID, applying them in three respectively two different quantities in order to destroy seed of Poa annua in the soil. The slowly emerging turf mixture RSM 3 permitted a large number of Poa annua grasses to emerge (about 275/m2). The mixture RSM 5 which formed a sward quickly and which contained a high proportion of perennial ryegrass reduced the development of Poa annua grasses to only 85 per square meter. The application of the product BASAMID, even in smallest quantities, resulted in an obvious reduction of the number of Poa annua plants. METAM-FLUID, however, showed, in the mixture RSM 3, an only small effect, and in the mixture RSM 5 an average effect. When higher quantities were applied, the Poa annua infestation diminished further only to a certain extent. Both products were obviously effective against dicotyledons." |
