| Abstract/Contents: | "Since, in the sixties, scientists and turf specialists had called attention to Poa supina, evaluation and breeding began at Steinach. It was soon obvious that this species was a good turf grass. The good resistance to wear and tear, its competition and capacity for survival in mixtures as well as its good capacity for regeneration were tested in several experiments. At the same time, the possibilities for seed production, a difficult venture with Poa supina, were investigated, regarding particularly the best time of sowing for seed propagation purposes, and the measures to be taken in seedfields kept for several years. As it appeared, when sown or planted after the middle of August, there was no longer any production of young shoots capable of jarovisation. Time of clipping, fertilization and thinning the following years, must induce the production of young shoots in autumn. By breeding, color, winter aspect, resistance to dryness and other characteristics can be improved. This applied particularly to the seed yield. There was sufficient proof in the breeding experiments which involved many ecotypes and their progeny of four generations that Poa supina reproduces in a panmictic manner, obviously fully self-fertilizing. No apomicitic forms were found." |
