Abstract/Contents:Discusses recent discoveries made by scientists at the University of Kentucky regarding the biological control of the black cutworms (BCW). Throughout the world, the BCW is a major pest of golf courses and other sports fields. The BCW larvae make burrows in the thatch or soil, causing "small dead patches or sunken pockmarks that resemble ballmarks on greens". Suggests frequent application of insecticide. During the summer of 2003, scientists discovered a baculovirus that caused BCW larvae to die by liquefaction. Tests were conducted and high mortality of BCW was observed. Suggests baculoviruses exhibit characteristics that make them ideal biological control agents and that using the AgipMNPV baculovirus against BCW would be both cost effective and environmentally sound.
