Abstract/Contents: | Analyzes costs and benefits of both walk mowing greens and triplex mowing greens. Triplex green mowers were first introduced in 1971 at Trosper Park Golf Course in Oklahoma City. They became the preferred method for mowing greens at many golf courses. However, by 1983, long-term effects of using triplex green mowers were beginning to show. Possible problems caused by triplex mowers include triplex ring, wear on turf areas surrounding greens, and increased soil compaction of a green soil profile. Triplex mowers may cause unsightly hydraulic leaks and can be difficult to maintain the uniformity of mowing height. In addition, triplex mowers may ultimately change the original shape of the green. On the other hand, walk mowing green is costly and requires a larger staff. Suggests that it is up to golf course superintendents to decide if walking green mowers are the solution or the problem. |
