Abstract/Contents: | "In 1984 and 1985, a bacterial disease of annual bluegrass was discovered in Michigan and Pennsylvania. A bacterium was isolated into pure culture by specialized laboratory techniques and was characterized as a pathovar of Xanthomonas campestris by various morphological, cultural, physiological, bio-chemical and immunological criteria. Electron microscopy studies indicate that the bacterium was limited to the xylem vessels of infected plants. Based on bacterial etiology and wilt symptomotology, the disease was named "bacterial wilt of annual bluegrass". The possibility of "bacterial wilt" as a biological herbicide was suddenly realized." Proposed research hypothesis and preliminary data are included. |
