Abstract/Contents:"On the experimental farm Dikopshof near Bonn pure seeds of Lolium perenne, Poa pratensis and Festuca rubra, of which two varieties had been selected, were tested from 1979 to 1981 regarding their reactions to wear and tear. The natural effect of trampling was simulated by the use of heavy drum rollers and rotary machines. By increasing the intensity of wear and tear, the tolerance margin of the varieties was to be found out. After three years of wear and tear, the results can be summarized as follows: The turf aspect is specific of the varieties for all levels of wear and tear; it may cover differences in the species. With increasing wear and tear, the aspect of all species and varieties has deteriorated. A not too frequent rolling is stimulating rather than detrimental to the turf sward. In all levels of wear and tear the varieties show a relatively high density of the sward. The loosening-up of the sward is clearly visible when the rotary machine was used. The simultaneous use of a heavy drum roller compacting the soil, counteracts the loosening-up effect. Gaps in the plots are more the result of the species and varieties used than due to management methods, with the exception of maximum wear and tear, which has lasting negative effects. Weed infestation is relatively high in the plots. Weeds can be damaged, however, by working the turf, especially in spring."
