Abstract/Contents:"There always have been some concern among turfgrass managers that preemergence herbicides applied to control annual grass weeds may adversely affect root growth of the turf. Many studies have been conducted to study these possible, deleterious rooting effects. Of all turfgrass species, only Kentucky bluegrass and bermudagrass rooting responses have been extensively evaluated. In Kentucky bluegrass, all commercial preemergence herbicides have been shown to reduce rooting. The relative severity of root inhibition in Kentucky bluegrass, at recommended use rates, has generally been bensulide (trade names Betasan, LescoSan, PreSan, others) > Benefin (trade name Balan) > oxadiazon (trade name Ronstar) > DCPA (trade name Dacthal) > siduron (trade name Tupersan). Limited testing also suggests that pendimethalin (trade names Lesco Pre-M and various O. M. Scott & Sons lables) may inhibit rooting of Kentucky bluegrass."
