Abstract/Contents:The article discusses the pros and cons of artificial turf and how a natural turf cover provides a superior surface for athletic fields. Failure of turf areas to support athletic events commonly occurs because of: improper specifications, improper enforcement of specifications, inadequate maintenance after successful establishment, abuse in use of the field, or inadequate facilities. Renovation techniques to improve an existing athletic field include core aerificaiton, verti-grooving, and overseeding with superior varieties of turfgrasses. With adequate lime, fertilizer, supplemental irrigation, mowing and restrictions on use, newly introduced seedlings can be nurtured to a mature dense turf. Some common faults contribuiting to inefficient or ineffective performance of drainage systems are also included.
