Abstract/Contents: | Traces the history of the USGA Green Section and the Sports Turf Research Institute. States that when it was first established, "the Green Section conducted research, established demonstration plots throughout the country, selected improved grasses for golf, answered inquiries, consulted, and published the USGA Green Section Bulletin, which included research reports and articles on every aspect of golf course management". Points out distinct differences in the development of the STRI and the USGA Green Section, including the fact that "the STRI became an independent organization...while the Green Section remained a department of the United States Golf Association". Discusses the increase of turfgrass research at agricultural universities following World War II. Concludes that "from their humble beginnings in the 1920s, who could have imagined that [the STRI and the USGA Green Section] would have such a far-reaching impact on turfgrass culture, the world of sport, and the quality of life". |
