Abstract/Contents:Development in turfgrass science has been evolving since the first major research advances in 1945, followed by an expansion of turfgrass usage technology around the world thereafter. Future turfgrass needs include: creating turf species that adapt to low maintenance conditions; improved resistance and tolerance to such environmental conditions such as: drought, heat, cold, wear, shade, soil compaction and soil salinity. Amount of pesticide usage can be expected to decline whereas integrated pest management practices will be integrated into computer-based models to better predict seasonal trends. Transgenic turfgrass cultivars with resistance to the major pest diseases and insects will be a key advance during the 21st century. Also discusses water conservation and distribution as potential concerns, and some corrective techniques are discussed. Fertilization practices will have a continuing trend to lower nitrogen fertility levels, combined with higher rates of potassium and iron usage. Growth regulators that will be developed are designed to reduce the growth of individual plant morphological structures as well as differential effects at the interspecies level. Physiological regulators will be developed that are active in the enhancement of tilelring, rooting, colour, antisenescence and stress tolerance such as for heat, cold and drought, where these types of materials could probably be applied by a foliar method. Computers will play a crucial role in turfgrass by monitoring and processing both the atmospheric and soil microenvironmental parameters that affect turfgrass.
