| Abstract/Contents: | Article provides a historical account of an agronomist's viewpoint throughout his career. "The need for science based research into turf problems was recognized in America when turfgrass trial centers were set up towards the end of the 19th century." Explains previous viewpoints on controlling diseases, topdressing drenches, and the education handed down from former greenskeeper. Describes how turf control methods were more of a "trial and error." It was in the past that turf control was more a of a trial and error test. The advent of triple mowers was a great leap foreword. The control of thatch has also evolved throughout the years with the methodologies are discussed. Discusses the evolution of mowers and shakers, along with the solutions of soil problems. Future changes and developments suggested include prudent use of water sources, developments in machinery that are economical, and better growing media for greens and winter pitches. |
