Abstract/Contents:Provides a historical evolutionary account of the technology in turf maintenance. Discusses the early mowers that were simple cutting machines that progressed into horse driven cutters. Engineer W. J. Stephenson-Peach produced the first petrol-driven mower in 1896. Between the two world wars a flood of manufactures entered into mower production, and some are still around today. In 1968 the first ride-on triple green mower was developed. Discuses the first groomer, invented by Laurence T. Lloyd. Explains the issue of scarification and aeration on turf and the mechanical difficulties that were developed are discussed. Details future trends in maintenance predicting that mowing will be done in a similar manner of today, but with higher amounts of information being sent in real time to the turf manager to become available. "Moving away from more conventional activities we will see robotic units at work, using a mixture of GPS and other more accurate technology to work safely and predictably at night to cover the more low risk areas of the course."
