Abstract/Contents:Presents a study conducted to "determine how much damage gray leafspot causes on St. Augustinegrass and how much quicker coverage of sprigged areas could be obtained by controlling the disease." Details methods and materials used in the study, stating that "the experiment was set up in the summer of 1959. Floratine St. Augustine was planted in a block with an area of 400 square feet..After planting, the large block was divided into four equal areas of 100 square feet each. In two of these areas gray leafspot was controlled by weekly applications of a fungicide...The other two areas were left untreated." Reports that "the 35.6 percent decrease in coverage after only 10 weeks indicates the extent of this damage. Since gray leafspot was not artificially induced but was allowed to occur naturally, this reduction in covereage is an accurate indication of the damage that may occur in any St. Augustinegrass planting." Concludes that "it is important that gray leafspot be controlled to some degree while a newly sprigged lawn becomes established. Control is also important in established plantings if a first quality lawn is to be maintained. Fortunately, gray leafspot can be controlled through the use of a fungicide such as thiram of captan at regular intervals during periods of warm humid weather."
