Abstract/Contents:The seasonal sequence in caring for lawns varies somewhat from location to location depending upon climatic influences. In America, where Poa, Lolium, Festuca and Agrostis are the chief lawngrass genera for the northern two-thirds of the United States, enthusiasm for lawn attention peaks in spring, although many practices might better be initiated in autumn. The ecological consequences of spring seeding, renovation, fertilizing and weeding are briefly reviewed; mowing and pest control assume great importance in summer; weed control and lawn refurbishment are especially rewarding in autumn. Lawn cultivars cited by the Lawn Institute's Variety Review Board include many of the same entities planted in Europe, the characteristics for which are generally recognized.
