Abstract/Contents:"Reduction in fungicide application with adequate disease control is a goal of environmentally responsible turfgrass managers. The objective of this experiment was to evaluate the efficacy of acibenzolar-S-methyl (ASM, 0.035 kg a.i. ha-1) and/or ^DDB-aminobutyric acid (BABA, 0.4, 0.8, and 1.6 kg a.i. ha-1) in conjunctin with chlorothalonil (2,4,5,6-tetracholoisophthalonitrile) applied at a rate lower than currently recommended for dollar spot (Sclerotinia homoecarpa F.T. Bennett.) and brown patch (Rhizoctonia solani Kuhn) control on creeping bentgrass (Agrostis palustris Huds.) putting greens. Field treatments were applied on 14-day intervals to a creeping bentgrass golf green during 2002 and 2003. Acibenzolar-S-methyl reduced dollar spot by at least 27% in 'Cobra' and 'L-93' creeping bentgrass. Combining chlorothalonil (4 kg a.i. ha-1) with ASM resulted in 44% fewer S. homoeocarpa infection centers compared to turfgrass recieving only chlorothalonil, but quality fell just below what would be considered aesthetically acceptable. Applications of BABA (0.8 kg a.i. ha-1) to L-93 resulted in 65% more S. homoeocarpa infection centers compared to untreated turfgrass in 2003. Brown patch was not affected by ASM, BABA, or their combination with chlorothalonil. The synergistic effect observed in dollar spot control with the applicaiton of ASM + chlorothalonil (4 kg a.i. ha-1) suggests this defense activator should be further evaluated for its potential to reduce fungicide requirements of creeping bentgrass putting greens."
