Abstract/Contents:Presents a brief history of the use of methyl bromide as a soil fumigant, from its origin in France to its 2001 phase-out. Summarizes the criteria necessary to justify transitional access to methyl bromide, stating that "the exemption application process is extremely rigorous". Also includes a summary of the national management strategy (NMS), with a focus on the allocation rule. Discusses the fate of methyl bromide-dependent crops, such as Florida tomatoes and peppers and Florida strawberries and floriculture. Suggests several chemical alternatives to methyl bromide, specifically 1,3-D, methyl isothiocyanate (MITC) generators and chloropicrin (42,62). Also suggests several non-chemical alternatives, including soil solarization and biological agents. Concludes that "it is critical that research in these areas continues to move forward so that the next phase-out does not result in the end of vegetable or ornamental production in the United States".
