Abstract/Contents:"This study was undertaken to determine product effectiveness of granular formulations to preventively control a mixed adult population of bluegrass and hunting billbug. The turfgrass area consisted of annual bluegrass (20%) and Kentucky bluegrass (80%) and was maintained at Penn State's Valentine Turfgrass Research Center at University Park. Treatment plots were 6 ^D#x 4 ft, arranged in a RCB design and replicated four times with a 1 ft barrier around all replicates. Granular formulations were applied with a hand-held shaker and mixed with fine top dressing sand to facilitate product distribution. Treatments were applied in late afternoon on 5 May under partly cloudy skies to moist soil and thatch. At that time, air temp was 65°F with RH = 41.2%. Soil temp at l and 2 inch depth was 56 and 54°F, respectively. Amount of thatch was 0.125-0.25 inch and water pH = 7.0. No irrigation was applied after treatments were completed. General soil conditions were as follows: soil textural class, silt loam; soil particle size analysis: sand, 16.2%; silt, 64.1%; clay, 19.7%; soil percent water content (percent by wt), 21.8; organic matter, 4.6%; CEC, 11.4; and soil pH, 6.1. Two 4 inch cup cutter sod samples were removed from each replicate on 5 Jul. The total no. of billbug larvae and pupae was counted and converted to ft2. Data was analyzed using Waller-Duncan k ratio (WD; P ≤ 0.05). The area selected for the experiment had been infested with a natural population of bluegrass and hunting billbugs during the spring of 2005 based on adult pitfall trap counts. All formulations significantly reduced billbug populations; however, select DPXE2Y45 formulations performed better than either Merit 0.5G or Talstar EZ. No phytotoxicity was noted."
