Abstract/Contents:"Several insecticides were tested for field efficacy against ABW on golf course fairway turf in spring 2008. The products included Acelypryn (chlorantraniliprole, a new active ingredient formerly designated as E2Y45 that was registered by USEPA in April 2008), Provaunt (indoxacarb), and Talstar (bifenthrin). Plots were treated 21 Apr, 2 May, 14 May, or 28 May. Some treatment regimes involved tank mixes, while others involved single applications or serial applications. Chlorantraniliprole was applied at the traditional time for preventive applications (between forsythia and dogwood full bloom), 21 Apr at this site, or on 2 May. Indoxacarb was applied on 2, 14, or 28 May. All plots were sampled 2 Jun 2008 to determine the efficacy of the compounds against larvae of the first generation of ABW. The test was conducted at Sleepy Hollow Country Club, Scarboro, NY. The conditions at the time of application were as follows: 21 Apr: air temp, 54° F, soil temp (at 2.0 inch), 53° F, water pH, 5.6; overcast, calm; 2 May: air temp, 50° F, soil temp (at 2.0 inches), 53°F, water pH, 5.4; low, heavy overcast with light NE breeze; 14 May: air temp, 68° F, soil temp (at 2.0 inches), 62° F, water pH, 6.3; sunny with light SW breeze; 28 May: air temp, 66° F, soil temp (at 2.0 inches), 60° F, water pH, 6.0; sunny with steady N breeze at 5 mph. Soil pH was 5.9; buffered pH, 6.7; CEC, 8.6 Meq/100g; thatch ca. 0.5 inch. Treatment plots were 6 ft by 6 ft, replicated four times, and arranged in a CRB design. All sprayable formulations were applied with a watering can (2 qt water per plot), with half the material applied in one direction and the remainder applied in a perpendicular direction. Plots were irrigated with 0.05 inch about 1 h after application. Product efficacy was evaluated on 2 Jun by removing ten 1.85- inch diameter cores from near the center of each plot, transporting the cores to our laboratory in Amherst, MA, and using a saline solution to extract all stages except eggs. Each core was recorded separately, and all counts were included in statistical analyses (Waller Duncan MRT, F = 9.78, P<0.0001). Larvae per core actually reflects counts of all larvae and pupae. Adults were not included in the analysis because of their mobility. There were >120 larvae per sq ft. in the untreated checks, well above the generally recognized spring threshold of 30 to 80 larvae per sq ft. All treatments reduced populations significantly compared to the untreated check. This site has not used pyrethroids heavily in past years and Talstar provided excellent control when applied on 21 Apr or 2 May. Both Acelepryn and Provaunt also provided excellent control in all the combinations tested."
