Abstract/Contents:Discusses the maintenance of bowling greens, indicating that Cumberland turf "enables a greenkeeper to commence his schedule of treatment early; and given reasonable weather, most bowling greens can be made to present a satisfactory condition at the opening of the playing season." Addresses the possible higher risk of disease when turf is "subjected to malnutrition," adding recommendations for fertilizer treatments based on the species present in Cumberland turf. Suggests piercing the soil by using "hollow tined forks" and discusses how to improve the silt. Explains that "once root development is encouraged, topgrowth can be promoted by gentle but regular raking or brushing." Concludes that there is a need for a "pooling of experience accompanied by an official inquiry into the intricate problems of Cumberland turf."
