Abstract/Contents:"This experiment was conducted on a golf course driving range located in Gulph Mills which was infested with a natural population of white grubs to determine the effectiveness of experimental formulations of CGA-293343. The turfgrass area consisted primarily of tall fescue (20%) Kentucky bluegrass (40%), and perennial ryegrass (40%). Treatment plots were 9 x 6 ft, arranged in the RCB block design and replicated 3 times. Granular formulations were applied with a hand-held shaker, and top dressing sand was added to facilitate product distribution. Liquid formulations were applied with a CO₂ compressed air sprayer with 4 8002VS TeeJet nozzles mounted on a 6 ft boom, operating at 28 psi, and applied in 817 ml of water/54 ft² or delivering 4 gal/1000 ft². At treatment time (22 Jun) the following soil and environmental conditions existed: air temperature, 75°F; soil temperature at 1 inch depth, 75°F; soil temperature at 2 inch, 76°F; RH, 79%; thatch condition, dry; soil condition, dry; amount of thatch, 0.0625-0.125 inch; soil textural class, loam; soil particle size analysis: 42.8% sand, 42.0% silt, 15.1% clay; organic matter, 5.6%; percent water content (percent by wt), 15.4; water pH, 7.0; soil pH, 5.4; application time, late-morning; and skies cloudy. Immediately after application, each treated plot was irrigated with 0.125 inch of water. Rainfall and irrigation data summary: 23-24 Jun, 0.35 inch; 26 Jun, 1.75 inch; 30 Jun, 0.3 inch; 4 Jul, 0.5 inch; 8 Jul, 1.25 inch; 16 Jul, 0.3 inch irrigation; 23 Jul, 0.4 inch irrigation; 31 Jul, 0.45 inch; 4 Aug, 0.5 in[ch] irrigation; 10 Aug, 0.77 inch; 14 Aug, 0.4 inch; 17 Aug, 0.6 inch; 18 Aug, 1.6 inch ; 27 Aug, 0.5 inch; 2 Sep, 0.2 inch; and 15 Sep, 0.08 inch. Posttreatment counts were made on 21 Sep. Three sod samples, each 1 ft², were randomly taken from each replicate, and the total number of scarab white grubs/ft² was recorded. The experimental area was previously infested in the spring with JB and NMC grubs. Five treatments provided significant control of all grubs and NMC while four treatments provided significant control of JB. Experimental formulations of CGA-293343 were effective and compared favorably with industry standards Merit and Mach-2. No phytotoxicity was noted."
