Abstract/Contents:"A field efficacy trial was performed to evaluate three insecticides for the control of mole cricket nymphs. Plots 20 ft x 20 ft were established on a heavily infested bermudagrass fairway at the Meadowlands Golf Club in Brunswick Co, NC. Treatments were replicated four times and randomly assigned to the plots in a RCBD. All insecticides were applied late in the afternoon on 14 Jul as peak hatch treatments for the control of small nymphs. All insecticide formulations were applied using a Scotts Easy^D]T^D]M hand-held granular spreader. The soil was very moist from rain occurring on the morning of 14 Jul and the previous day. The 4-inch soil temp was 82°F. Air teimp was 76°F. The fairway irrigation system was used to lightly irrigate the test site following application. Soil at the site was classified as Grifton fine sandy loam with a pH of 6.2 and 0.6% humic matter. Species composition at the site was determined by soapy water flush sampling as 100% TMC. Plots were evaluated for fresh damage on 21, 28 Jul and 4, 11, 18 Aug (7, 14, 21, 28, and 35 DAT, respectively). Control was evaluated using the damage grid method of Mark and Cobb (1989). A 1 m² grid divided into nine subsections was placed randomly in each plot and a damage rating (0-9) was given based on the number of subsections in which fresh damage was observed. Five damage ratings were taken in each plot on each sampling date. The actual damage rating means for each sampling date are presented in the Table. All data were transformed (square root of X+0.5) prior to ANOVA and mean separation by Tukey's Studentized Range Test (HSD). Analysis of damage ratings at 7 DAT indicate that only the 0.4lb(AI)/acre rate of Talstar 0.2 G (bifenthrin) had significantly less damage then the untreated check; however, damage in this treatment was not significantly different from that observed in either the 0.2 lb(AI)/acre rate of Talstar or the damage than the untreated check, but damage in this treatment was not indifferent from that observed in the other insecticide treatments. Evaluation at 21 DAT reveal that only the 0.4 lb(AI)/acre rate of Talstar had significantly less damage than the untreated plots; however, damage in this treatment was not found to be significantly different from that observed in either the 0.2 lb(AI)/acre rate of Talstar, or the DeltaGard treatment. At 28 DAT results show that all insecticide treatments except the SPG99-004 had significantly less damage than the untreated check. Similar results were observed at 35 DAT. The SPG99-004 treatment did not significantly reduce damage at any date. No phytotoxicity was observed."
