Abstract/Contents:"A field efficacy trial was performed to evaluate four insecticide formulations for the control of mole cricket nymphs. Plots 25 x 25 ft were established on a heavily infested bermudagrass fairway at the Meadowlands Golf Club in Brunswick Co, NC. Treatments were replicated four times and randomly assigned to the plots in a RCBD. All insecticides were applied late in the afternoon on 7 Jul as peak hatch treatments for the control of small nymphs. The soil was moist and lightly irrigated prior to application. The 4-inch soil temp was 85°F. Air temp was 80°F. Granular fromulations were applied using a Scotts Easy hand-held granular spreader. Spray formulations were applied using a John Deere Turf Gator-mounted, CO²-powered research sprayer equipped with 8003 VS nozzles delivering 25 gpa. The fairway irrigation system was used to apply approximately 0.25 inch of water to the test site immediately following application. Soil at the site was classified as Grifton fine sandy loam with a pH of 6.2 and 1.14% humic matter. Species composition at the site was determined by soapy water flush sampling as 100% TMC. Plots were evaluated for fresh damage on 21, 28, Jul and 4, 11, 18 Aug (14, 21, 28, 35, and 42 DAT, respectively). Control was evaluated using the damage grid method of Mack and Cobb (1989). A 1 m² grid divided into nine subsections was placed randomly in each plot and a damage rating (0-9) was given based on the number of subsetions in which fresh damage was observed. Five damage ratings were taken in each plot on each sampling date. The actual damage rating means for each sampling date are presented in the Table. All data were transformed (square root of X+0.5) prior to ANOVA and mean separation by Tukey's Studentized Range Test (HSD). Analysis of plot data a 14 and 21 DAT show no significantly differences in damage among the insecticide treatments; however, only the DC 5739 and Chipco Choice 0.1G (fipronil) treatments had significantly less damage than the untreated check. Similar results were observed at 28 DAT, but at this date the damage in the low rate (90 g(AI)/acre) treatment of CGA 293,343 25WG was significantly greater than in either the DC 5739 or Chipco Choice treatments, and not different from that observed in the untreated check. Evaluation at 35 DAT show no significant differences among the insecticide treatments; however, only the high rate (120 g (AI)/acre) of CGA 293,343 0.22G, the DC5739 and Chipco Choice treatments were found to have had signficantly less damage than the untreated check. No phyotoxicity was observed."
