Abstract/Contents:"This trial was conducted on a hillside rough at Sagamore-Hampton Golf Course, North Hampton, NH. The rough was mowed at 1 inch. Preventative treatments were applied on 17 Jun at the start of oviposition, and curative treatments were applied 13 wk later on 15 Sep against 3^D]r^D]d instar larvae. The plots were 49 ft², replicated 5 times, in an RCB design. Liquid treatments were applied using a 7-ft boom on a 2-wheel, bicycle-type CO₂ sprayer; the boom was equipped with four 8005 fan-type nozzles, fitted with 50-mesh screens. The volume of water and insecticide was 2 gal/1000 ft², delivered at 40 psi. The granulars were evenly applied using large commercial salt shakers. All treatments were irrigated with 0.25 inch of water immediately after application. Weather conditions 17 Jun were as follows: sky, overcast; wind, calm; air temp, 70.3°F; soil surface temp, 70.3°F; at 1-inch depth, 71.6°F; at 2-inch depth, 68.9°F. Soil conditions on 15 Sep were as follows: sky, overcast; wind, calm; air temp, 73°F; soil surface temp, 72.7°F; at 1-inch depth, 68.5°F; at 2-inch depth, 67.1°F. Soil composition was as follows: texture, loam; sand, 46%; silt, 47%; clay, 7%; thatch, 1/4-inch; organic matter, 12.8%; moisture, 8.9%; soil pH, 7.4. Plots were rated for live larvae on 7 Oct; 1 ft² per replicate was sampled using a sod cutter to remove the turf. Thiamethoxam and Merit gave acceptable control as a preventative treatment. All treatments gave poor curative control. No phytotoxicity was observed."
