Abstract/Contents: | "This evaluation was established to acquire data on early summer and fall suppression of white grubs on a turfgrass area located at Penn State's Valentine Turfgrass Research Center at University Park. The turfgrass area consisted of perennial ryegrass (100%). Treatment plots were 9 x 6 ft, arranged in a RCB design and replicated three times. Granular formulations were applied with a hand-held shaker and mixed with fine top dressing sand to facilitate product distibution. At the first treatment time (3 Aug), the followng soil and environmental conditions existed: air temp, 62°F; soil temp at 1 inch depth, 72°F, soil temp at 2 inch, 70°F; RH, 89%; amt of thatch, 0.125 inch; soil textural class, silt loam; soil particle size analysis: 15.2% sand, 62.0% silt, 22.8% clay; organic matter, 4.8%; soil percent water content (percent by wt), 14.6; soil pH, 6.4; treatments were applied in early-morning; and sunny skies. At the second treatment time, (13 Sep) the following soil and environmental conditions existed: air temp, 73°F; soil temp at 1 inch depth, 66°F; soil temp at 2 inch, 64°F; RH, 65%; amt of thatch. 0.125 inch; soil textural class, silt loam; soil particle size analysis: 15.2% sand, 62.0% silt, 22.8% clay; organic matter, 4.8%; soil percent water content (percent by wt), 16.1; soil pH, 6.4; treatments were applied in mid-morning; and partly sunny skies. Treatments were irrigated with 0.5 inch of water immediately after treatment on 3 Aug and 13 Sep. The experimental area was irrigated as and when needed throughout the summer because of severe drought conditions. Three white PVC cylinders (8 inch x 6 inch height) were placed in each replicate and 25 JB adults were released inside each cylinder on two separate release dates: 20 Jul (60% females) and 26 Jul (70% females). Adult beetles were maintained inside by covering individual cylinders with white shade screen. The latter procedure allowed for oviposition by adult female beetles. All PVC cylinders were removed on 2 Aug. Post-treatment counts were completed on 5 Oct. Three ft² sod samples were randomly taken from each replicate, and the total number of whit grubs/ft² was recorded. During the fall of 1998 the experimental turfgrass area was infested with Japanese beetle grubs with an avg of 12.8 grubs recorded per ft². At the time of the second application (13 Sep), third instar JB grubs were present. All treatments provided significant reduction of JB on 5 Oct. No phytotoxicity was noted." |
