| Abstract/Contents: | "A simple, rapid technique for direct selection for leaf water conductance (LWC) in two populations of Lolium perenne L. is described. Measurements were made with a diffusion porometer in growth rooms on the youngest fully expanded leaf of each tiller. Considerable variation in LWC was found between 100 genotypes of each population. Most of the variation in total LWC was attributed to variation in adaxial LWC and it was shown that ignoring abaxial LWC gave very similar ranking of genotypes to those using total LWC. Selection criteria were then established which maximized the repeatability of LWC measurements and allowed selection of groups of plants significantly different from one another in LWC. The variation in LWC was not related either to stomatal length or number, or to growth rate." |
