Abstract/Contents:Defines peat as "any partially decomposed plant material that has accumulated in water or in a water-saturated soil where plant growth and deposition have exceeded decomposition." Describes various types of peat as well as muck, gyttja, dy, marl, and pumice. Discusses common sequences of two or more of these layers. Describes the rate of formation of peat soils and the effect of plant nutrients on the rate of formation. Mentions several soil tests as a measure of fertility status and notes the inorganic composition of organic soils. Concludes by describing some problems in stratigraphy, formation, subsidence, and chemistry of organic soils.
