Abstract/Contents:SUMMARY: "Most diseases in turfgrasses are caused by fungi. There are 3 conditions that must be met before disease can occur: 1) a susceptible host, 2) a virulent pathogen, 3) a favourable environment. The objective in management for disease control is to remove one or more of these conditions. The availability of a susceptible host is reduced by using resistant varieties. The presence of a virulent pathogen is reduced by using fungicides and cultural measures. The favorable environment can be modified in such a way as to hinder the development of the pathogen. Two of the most important practices in this regard are thatch control and watering schedules which minimize the period of leaf wetness. Different grass types have different degrees of susceptibility to different diseases hence the advisability of using mixtures and blends rather than pure stands. Proper management for disease control involves many considerations which concern both the pathogen and the host. Attention to basic measures which contribute to healthy plant growth will help avoid disease. Fungicides are a component of the overall management plan for disease control but care should be taken that they are used to complement rather than replace cultural measures."
