Abstract/Contents:Zoysia japonica, Z. matrella and Z. tenuifolia grow wild throughout the country, and they seem to be native plants of Japan. These species have long been used for turf and erosion control since the 12th century. Japan is having a great boom in golf course construction and there are about 1,400 golf courses being played by 8 million golfers. Z. tenuifolia, Agrostis palustris and Cynodon dactylon are used for putting green. Turfgrass investigation was initiated in 1910's. Japan Greenkeepers Association was formed in 1957 and Kainsai-and nishi-Nippon Green Research Institutes were established in 1961 and 1962, respectively. A decade of revolution in turfgrass research was 1960's in Japan and 335 papers were presented in scientific journals or magazines until 1975. An outline of these research activities and problems encountered are briefly described. The universities and various government organizations, including grassland scientists, are becoming increasingly aware of the importance of the turfgrass field. Remarkable progress in turfgrass science could be expected within the next ten years in Japan.
