Abstract/Contents:The first two pitches made with artificial turf in Switzerland were opened in 1974 at Kusnacht and Schwamedingen, both near Zurich. In their two years of use since then, experience has been gained and information collected. This article summarizes the opinions and observations of footballers and their trainers, on these two areas of synthetic turf. The most interesting points concern the technical aspects of use for sport, and the psychological and medical aspects. The artificial turf pitches have been both highly praised and strongly criticised. The main criticisms have been of the great hardness of the turf and the likelihood of injury to the footballers from friction burns. On the other hand there has naturally been great appreciation of the high resistance to wear and tear, and of the possibility of playing all year round. Artificial turf, however, is not considered an alternative to natural turf. Natural turf will always be preferred. The value of artificial turf will be for training areas, not grounds for matches.
