| Abstract/Contents: | Turf areas in the Alps are severely damaged by the overwintering fungi Fusarium nivate and Typhula, the latter being more damaging. The severity of damage depends mainly on the soil temperature, the snow cover and its duration, and the species making up the sward. Such damage can, however, be prevented by the application of fungicides. Some of the products on the market were tested for their effect. In one experiment they were applied once only in autumn, in another, they were applied in autumn and in winter. Fusatox Royal, Brassicol wettable powder, Dithane M 22, Daconil, Benlate (Benomyl) were much more effective when applied twice, especially with a long-lasting snow cover. The ranking order for efficiency, taking into account the single application also, was: Fusatox Royal, Brassicol wettable powder, Dithane M 22, Daconil, Benlate (Benomyl) and Tecto 40, whereas Delancol, Cerobin M and a Ceresan solution were more or less unsuitable at the concentrations tested. The highly effective products have the additional advantage that the turf keeps its green color better, or becomes green earlier and more distinctly. Under extreme conditions with long duration snow cover the products should generally be applied only once, using those most suitable for this method of treatment. |
