| Abstract/Contents: | Presents a study to determine chemicals that are effective in controlling Gryllotalpa africana, the African mole cricket, in South Africa. Describes two field trials conducted on infested kikuyu grass. Results indicate that fipronil and thiamethoxam were effective in controlling instar nymphs, "resulting in no measureable infestation 21 days after application," and "fipronil treatments caused significant reductions (after 14 days) in the population consisting of late instar and adults." Results also indicate that "thiamethoxam treatment did result in density reduction, but was not significantly different to the control over the monitoring period," and furfural treatment did not show a reduction in G. africana. Concludes that "treatments will be optimally applied just after the eclosion (egg hatch) period." |
