Abstract/Contents:"The response of 'Pencross' creeping bentgrass (Agrostis stolonifera L.) color ratings to irrigations scheduled using four Crop Water Stress Index (CWSI) Models at three (0.25, 0.50 and 0.75) irrigation set points (CWSISP) was examined. Field studies were conducted in Illinois, U.S.A. on turfgrass grown in a Flanagan silt loam (fine, montmorillonitic, mesic aquic argiudolls). Variables used in the empirical calculations of the CWSI were air vapor pressure deficit (VPD) (Model I); VPD and net radiation load (Rn) (Model II); and VPD, Rn, and wind speed (Model III). Model IV used an energy balance approach. Turfgrass was irrigated with 1.3 cm of water when the CWSI ^D>= CWSISP. The number of rating dates when turfgrass color was unsatisfactory (color < 7) on a 1 to 9 scale (9=optimum) was used as a criterion for comparing Models and CWSISP tested. Dates in which turfgrass color was unsatisfactory ranged from zero of nine rating dates where creeping bentgrass received 20.5 cm of water over a 30-day period using Model I at a set point index of 0.25, to eight of nine dates where only 1.4 cm of water was applied using Model IV with a CWSISP of 0.75. Turfgrass performance under varying CWSISP values could be evaluated but Model usefulness could not be judged by color response alone as the minimum CWSISP for Models III and IV were set too high. The complete energy balance method of calculating the CWSI resulted in a stronger relationship between the CWSI and resultant turfgrass color (R2=0.62**) than did the empirical models. Results of this work can be used to further refine the selection of CWSI values at which to irrigate creeping bentgrass."
