Abstract/Contents: | "Perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.) cultivars with resistance to gray leaf spot (caused by the fungus Pyricularia grisea (Cooke) Sacc.) would be beneficial to turf managers and the environment by reducing the need for fungicide applications. The objectives of this study were to: 1) determine broad sense heritability from 54 replicated experimental selections in two locations and 2) determine gain from two cycles of selection for gray leaf spot resistance in 8 different populations of perennial ryegrass in two locations. Survivors were selected separately from these populations following a natural epidemic of gray leaf spot in both 2001 and 2002 at Salem, NJ. The two selected cycles for each population were compared to the base population by comparing disease resistance in two perennial ryegrass field experiments established in 2003 at Adelphia and Salem, NJ. Susceptibility of germplasm to gray leaf spot was evaluated following ephemeral natural outbreaks of the disease that ocurred three to four weeks post seeding in both locations. Both cycles of selection showed steady dramatic improvements in gray leaf spot resistance compared to the unselected populations at both locations. The high broad-sense heritability estimate (0.95) was consistent with previous experiments of gray leaf spot resistance in perennial ryegrass. The steady realized gain was 31% from C0 to C1 and 57% from C1 to C2. This research indicates that continued selection for gray leaf spot resistance is important for the development of cultivars with improved disease resistance." |
