Abstract/Contents:Overviews research to assess the use of glass recycled into sand to be used in the sports turf industry. STRI is looking at this process, via a carefully controlled milling process, to produce a quality sand product. Initial trials examine three potential areas: 1) to assess weather the glass-derived sands can be successfully used in golf bunkers, 2) to incorporate glass-derived sand into rootzone mixes, and 3) to use it as a top dressing to improve the firmness and drainage of golf fairways. Concludes with three main points: 1) it is important that glass-derived sands for use in the sports turf industry can be produced with acceptable tolerances of particle sizes as this can have serious consequences for on term performance and drainage, 2) glass-derived sands performed well as bunker sands, providing better stability underfoot and reduced plugging when compared with conventional sands, and 3) issues such as the interaction between players and glass-derived sand and their perceptions to it, were beyond ht remit of the study.
