Abstract/Contents:"Instruction over the Internet is a new reality that is having a profound effect on education at all levels. With the acquisition of a computer and modem, anyone can tap into the World Wide Web and access the informational and instructional resources resident therein. Web-based instructional resources include two types: knowledge-based and case-based. Knowledge-based instructional resources, organized as modules, are useful for acquiring factual and concept knowledge. Case-based instructional resources, presented as historical cases, are useful for developing problem-solving skills through exposure to problem descriptions, actions taken, and results obtained. When organized into a keyword-accessible database, they constitue a learning resource that can be of enormous value to those attempting to address the same or similar problems. While historical cases deal only with cause-and-effect relationships, knowledge-based instructional modules can be developed to convey the concepts and processes that underlie those relationships. When linked together, historical cases and instructional modules can provide a powerful array of "just-in-time" learning resources for assisting turfgrass managers and other filed practitioners in not only dealing with problems encountered in the field, but also for fully benefiting from their experiences by dramatically expanding their professional knowledge and skills. A Turfgrass Case Library (TCL) containing case studies linked to instructional modules was developed and evaluated by 29 undergraduate students. The overwhelming response was that the Library was an easy-to-use and valuable learning resource that should be expanded and promoted among students and field practitioners."
