Abstract/Contents:"In 1955 clippings from the fourteenth green at Memphis Country Club were collected and weighed each time this common Bermudagrass green was mowed. A 5-pound green weight sample was taken each week and combined into five composites for chemical analysis. Mowing started on May 9 and stopped September 11, making a total of exactly 18 weeks. The dry weight of clippings produced during that time was 120.19 pounds per 1000 square feet. The amount of plant food elements removed per month and for the 18-week period was as follows: A 100-pound bag of 6-2-4 grade fertilizer would restore all the three primary plant food elements removed from 1000 square feet during the season at Memphis, Tennessee. Clippings contained about as much sulphur as phosphoric acid. Similar results were obtained on a bentgrass green at Brynwood Country Club, Milwaukee, Wisconsin, during the 1944 season. Besides the major plant food elements, the chemical analysis included silica, calcium, magnesium, iron, and aluminum. The data do not include the amount of nutrient elements contained in the turf on the green, or in the root system."
