| Abstract/Contents: | The losses of EDB and DBCP (Newagon, etc., predecessor of EDB as turf fumigant) and restrictions on use of some other nematicides have caused concern to the Florida golf course superintendents. Unfortunately, a replacement for these banned products is not in sight. Tests on injection of liquid Mocap (a new product) into shallower soil depth did not have conclusive results. Ciba-Geigy may be coming out with a product called 'Triumph' while DuPont Chemical Co. is actively evaluating their 'Vydate'. There are other experimental chemicals at various stages of development. But due to the long obstacle course of registration requirements, these products (if successful) will not be introduced for many years. Registration requirements are stiff because nematicides are highly toxic, water soluble and some have carcinogenic potential (methyl bromide). Turf production and management industries can certainly have a direct effect on the fate of nematicides as well as other pesticicdes. Careless use will accelerate further restriction. Less dependence on nematicides usage is desirable. Future control over nematodes could well be biological. |
