Abstract/Contents:Discusses the use of natural areas on golf courses and the advantages of using wild areas such as enhanced water quality and providing a habitat for plants and wildlife. Also cites reduced operating costs due to elimination of weekly mowing and lower water useage. Details the process of creating a natural area and how to select the right site for a natural area. Lists "questions to ask when reviewing sites as potential no-mow areas." States that "plant selection is a critical step in the planning process. It should be based on the location of the site and growing conditions." Also states that "all naturalized areas, whether forest, grassland, meadow, or wetland, require some seasonal maintenance to keep them playable, visually acceptable, and to maximize their environmental value." Emphasizes the importance of communicating with golfers and committee members when trying to establish natural areas to help gain acceptance of the plan.
