Question:"The site of our new green has been graded by bulldozer and is formed of a heavy but stoney sand. We would like to seed in spring and would welcome advice on site preparation, time of sowing and seeds mixture."
Answer/Response:"The main requirement is an adequate depth of true top soil of a light to medium texture. A minimum depth of 9 in. firmed is desirable. The procedure in preparing and seeding is as follows:- 1. Form desired features of the green using the existing heavy sand. 2. Evenly spread the top soil obtained, to provide at least the minimum depth. 3. Send a 1 lb. sample of the top soil to the Research Station for analysis. 4. Cultivate the top soil to work down to a fine condition removing all rootstocks of perennial weeds. 5. During early April prepare a fine, evenly firmed and smooth seed bed to desired contours by raking and heeling and later raking and rolling. 6. Apply recommended fertilizer evenly and lightly rake into the soil surface. 7. Seed the green during suitable weather in April using a mixture of:- 8 parts Chewings' fescue at 1 ½ oz. per sq. yd., 2 parts New Zealand browntop at 1 ½ oz. per sq. yd. 8. Lightly rake the seed into the surface. 9. Following germination of the seed the green should be lightly rolled. 10. During any period of drought water to prevent the young grass suffering a check."
