Question:"Our spiking machine is fitted with 4 in. tines. Is this the right length or should they be 3 or 2 ½ in.? Our soil is on the heavy side. We also have the root pruner knives. Are they what you expect us to use for slit tining? They seem to be rather fierce and pull up the turf."
Answer/Response:"The 4 in. tines will be quite satisfactory for spiking the turf on your heavy soil mainly in the autumn. The root pruner knives are the ones we intended you to use for slit tining. On well rooted turf these tines do little damage, but when some is caused it often indicates that the turf's root growth is very poor and in particular need of spiking."
