Question:"The growth of a new lawn sown with Chewings' fescue and browntop has been unsatisfactory. There are lots of brown and bare patches and round these the grass has turned a purplish colour. Can you please tell me from examination of the enclosed sample the cause and cure?"
Answer/Response:"Examination of the seedling grasses shows that they are affected by "damping-off". This condition is not uncommon in seedling grasses especially where the rate of sowing has been heavy. Three types of fungal organism have been found any one of which could be responsible. Cheshunt compound gives good control - ½ oz. being dissolved in 1 gal. of water and applied to 1 sq. yd. of turf. Alternatively a mercury fungicide could be used."
