Question:"Would you recommend a type of selective weedkiller effective against knotweed which is infesting a football pitch?"
Answer/Response:"Knotweed (Polygonum aviculare) is very resistant to selective weedkillers and can only be dealt with satisfactorily when caught in the seedling stage. The M.C.P.A. selective weedkillers are most effective against the weed but unfortunately the time for their use often coincides with the renovation period of football pitches. As M.C.P.A. selective weedkillers can upset germination of seed and retard seedling grass it is necessary, if renovation is done by seeding, to treat the knotweed with the less effective 2:4 D selective weedkillers. They are less harmful to young grass."
